2007 mini cooper review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. It produces approximately the same horsepower as before: 120 in the cooper and 175 in the cooper s. But the devil lies in the details. A turbocharger in the cooper s in place of the old supercharger produces 177 pound-feet of torque from 1700 to 5000 rpm, significantly improving the sportier model's performance. the new engine, as well as new european pedestrian safety standards, required that bmw redesign the front panels. Nevertheless, without the old model to compare, most observers would have difficulty spotting the changes. The mini still is most aptly described as looking like a cheery english bulldog. there are changes in the headlamps and turn signals, now mounted on the chassis instead of attached to the hood, but they retain their large oval shape. Combined with the broad grille, chrome on the cooper and black mesh on the cooper s, the car has the same smiley face as before. the interior has been redesigned to increase space, but continues to pay homage to the mini heritage. Standard wheels are 15-inch alloy with tubeless tires, and the car is fitted with a spare tire and wheel; 16 and 17-inch wheels are optional. the mini cooper s is equipped with a turbocharged version of the same engine, stiffer sport suspension, performance exhaust system, and 16-inch alloy wheels; 17-inch wheels are optional. Exterior design details, including a black grille inset, hood scoop, rear bumper insets and prominent rear spoiler wing (optional on the cooper), distinguish the s from the cooper. options include the cooper sport package 1,400), which adds to the cooper the rear spoiler, sport seats, 16-inch wheels with performance or all-season tires, front fog lamps and white or black bonnet stripes if desired. The premium package 1,400) adds multi-function sport steering wheel with wood or leather trim, front-opening twin-glass electric sun roof with front and rear shades, and automatic climate control with carbon filter and an integrated control that replaces the separate temperature, fan, and a/c controls. The convenience package 1,400) adds universal garage door opener, keyless access that allows the driver to unlock the car and start the engine with the keyless transmitter in a pocket or purse, auto-dimming rearview mirror, center arm rest, rain sensor and auto headlights and mobile phone readiness. A cold weather package 300) adds heated headlamp washer jets, heater mirrors, and heated seats. A navigation system 2,100) is also available. safety features on the new hardtop models include passive front and rear crumple zones and side-intrusion protection, six airbags, abs anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, and cornering brake control. The new brake assistant on both models detects emergency operation of the brakes, and builds up maximum brake pressure as quickly as possible. Dynamic stability control is optional on both models, and automatic stability control + traction (asc+t) with on-off control is optional on the cooper and standard on the cooper s. Hill assist start-off assistance is a feature of dsc, activating the brakes when starting on an uphill ascent to prevent the car from rolling back. walkaroundthe new mini is still unmistakably a mini. Though forced to extensively redesign the car for safety, mechanical, and manufacturing considerations, bmw designers were reluctant to risk messing with a successful formula. Anyone who is not already a mini owner will have difficulty distinguishing the new mini from the old one, unless the two are side by side. Nevertheless, though the same chassis has been used, there is not a single exterior panel that is common between the two cars. the front of the mini had to be restyled to conform to more rigid european restrictions on exterior panel shapes for pedestrian safety, as well as to adapt to the shape of the new engine. However, because the designers didn't wish to alter the iconic bulldog image of the new mini, the remainder of the car had to be restyled as well. close inspection of the exterior shows that in almost all areas, the design and execution of trim features is upgraded from the 2006 model, with examples such as the incorporation of turn signals into the headlamp clusters, incorporation of the headlamp clusters into the fenders but fitting through openings in the hood (in contrast to the previous model which had the headlamps built into the hood), and the grille. interiordescribing the new model, the designers call it 'evolutionary on the outside, revolutionary on the inside.' however, since major design cues have been retained, revolutionary may be too strong a word. The interior still has a sporty feeling, though now a bit less extreme, with the enlarged round speedometer in the center of the dash, and the tachometer mounted on and moving with the tilt-adjustable steering column to remind owners of the classic mini heritage. audio controls have been moved from the center stack into the bottom half of the speedometer dial and the heating and air conditioning controls on the optional automatic climate controls have been compressed into a smaller mini-wing shaped cluster. Even a six-foot, five-inch driver will be comfortable in the front seat, and the three manual levers, controlling height, rake, and front-rear position, allow both driver and passenger to find a comfortable sitting position. having had the experience of driving 5000 miles in 15 days in the 2006 model, i can attest to the surprising comfort of the seats and driving position of the car. The few changes that have been made in the seats in the 2007, improving the shape and position of the bolsters, have only improved these characteristics. upholstery and trim has been upgraded, with the range of customizing possibilities expanded for 2007. Now available in both hardtop and convertible variants, the mini cooper delivers agile handling, crisp performance and an interminably cute appearance in a tidy, efficient, front-wheel drive package, with plenty of space and comfort for front seat passengers. 2013 mini cooper models get bluetooth handsfree connectivity and a usb port as standard equipment. Premium gasoline is required on all models. base mini coopers make 121 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque. Acceleration performance isn't quick, but it's adequate. We think this engine works best with the manual transmission, which adds to the sportiness. The mini cooper delivers excellent fuel economy, earning an epa rating of 29/37 mpg city/highway with the stick, and 28/36 mpg city/highway with the automatic. mini cooper s models come with a turbocharged version of the same engine that generates a more substantial 181 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. They use the same turbocharged engine as the s, and are tuned for even more power. Jcw models use an ultra-firm suspension and churn out 208 hp and 192 lb.-ft. Of torque, making for one of the best power-to-weight ratios on the market. Surprisingly, though, fuel economy remains the same as the s, with 26/35 mpg city/highway with the manual and 26/24 mpg city/highway with the newly available automatic. the mini cooper hardtop is quite practical when viewed as a two-seat car with good rear cargo capacity. The front seats are very comfortable and supportive, and they are large enough to accommodate all sizes of drivers and front passengers. With its hatchback and folding rear seats, the hardtop can haul reasonable amounts of gear. The back seats are best left for small children or, better yet, stuff. a wide range of styling options allows owners to personalize their cars, and it's a major part of mini's appeal. The choices cover upholstery style, material and color; exterior graphics; trim pieces; ambient lighting; and exterior paint, including contrasting colors for the roof. Functional options include high-end features like adaptive xenon headlights, rear obstacle warning and a navigation system. minis have a price premium over other compacts, and options can add up quickly. But fans don’t seem to mind, and mini has developed quite a cult following. Standard equipment includes leatherette (vinyl) upholstery, air conditioning, power windows, locks and outside mirrors; cruise control, keyless entry, a tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, a height-adjustable driver seat, bluetooth handsfree connectivity and a six-speaker audio system with a cd player, hd radio, auxiliary audio jack and a usb port. The convertible has a pop-up rear rollover bar, and the hardtop comes with side curtain airbags. All models with the manual transmission feature hill assist, which activates the brakes when starting on an uphill start to prevent the car from rolling back. walkaroundthe mini cooper lineup has multiplied since this second-generation version was launched as a 2007 model. Yet none of the subsequent models will be mistaken for anything other than a close sibling to the chic, irrepressible cute hardtop, or for that matter any mini model sold since the brand was re-introduced for 2000. the convertible closely resembles the standard hardtop, and matches its dimensions. The soft-top maintains the same basic silhouette as the hardtop, though the heated glass rear window is tilted farther forward. The rear side windows are about a third of the size of those on the hardtop because the cloth top wraps farther around the sides of the car. When the convertible top is down, it stacks at the back of the car. The look is fine, but it blocks the driver's lower line of sight to the rear. the convertible's insulated fabric roof opens at the touch of a button in just 15 seconds at speeds up to 18 mph, which is very convenient. There are no latches to unhook, simply press the button. A sliding roof function opens just the portion of the top that's over the front seats. It's like a big sunroof that can be opened at speeds up to 75 mph. mini cooper s models are distinguishable from the standard versions, no matter the body style. Black mesh grilles replace the shiny bars, lower brake ducts with optional chrome frames guide cooling air toward the brake discs. Most noticeable is the chrome-ringed hood scoop on cooper s models. interiorall mini cooper cabins are charming with excellent finish. The plastics have a quality look and feel. This also goes for the base leatherette, aka vinyl, upholstery. Multiple leather options are available, including a cloth and leather combination, a full leather option, and the glove soft lounge leather with contrasting piping, similar to classic british sedans. Ambient lighting is standard on most models, and it softly illuminates the door panels and footwells with subtle leds. The driver can change the color of the lighting across a spectrum from soft orange to crisp blue. despite diminutive exterior dimensions, mini cabins are surprisingly spacious up front. Even a 6-foot, 5-inch driver can be comfortable in the front seat. The basic manual levers, controlling height, seatback rake, and front-rear travel, allow just about everyone to easily find a comfortable spot. the mini driving position is excellent. The available sport seats are even better. a round, plastic transmitter replaces a conventional ignition key. It slides into a slot next to the steering column, and the driver fires the engine by pressing the adjacent a start/stop button. The button is cute and inoffensive, but no more effective than a standard key. The optional proximity key allows the driver to leave the transmitter in purse or pocket and just press the start button. We'd prefer a traditional key, but that's not an option. all models follow mini's sporty tradition of a big, round speedometer in the center of the dash. The tachometer is mounted on the tilt/telescoping steering column, moving with the wheel as it's adjusted it up and down. The available automatic climate control system is cleverly configured in the shape of the winged mini logo. The tuning knob is centered with most other audio buttons at the bottom of the speedometer, while the volume control sits further down the center stack, closer to the hvac controls.
